Railroad Earth
Apr. 8th, 2005 12:31 amI was sitting here at my computer, minding my own beeswax, when Doro shouted out something about some band she was reading about in the News & Review. She said they sounded good and she wanted to see them because they were playing in Chico.
I went to the CN&R's online site and read the article. Ugh.
One adoring fan of the New Jersey six-piece bluegrass/rock/jazz/ Celtic band Railroad Earth, commenting on the band's Web site about its debut Sugar Hill CD Bird in a House, describes the band's music as "hippie jam band music played on acoustic instruments."
I just can't get into the Grateful Dead and those jam bands that have followed, like Phish. I dunno why. Maybe I didn't take enough drugs when I was younger, my mind is still locked down in too rigid of a mold or something. So, I wasn't too eager to go see these guys. I did go to www.archive.org and looked to see if any of their shows were available for downloading. Turns out they had 225 shows I could choose from. After reading some of the reviews I downloaded the show from May 15th of 2004. After I got it downloaded and unpacked I fired up foobar and gave em a listen.
The first song is called simply 'Jam'. It starts off with a drum beating and then some strings join in and ... it sounds really good. I can't believe this wasn't recorded in a studio. Partway through the first song I was online buying two tickets for their show here in Chico. It's love at first listen, I guess. I wanna burn copies of this for people and hand em out. I thought about calling my sister and telling her about it, but she's already in bed, I imagine. I'll have to get burn her a copy of this though, quickly so she has time to get tickets if she wants to go.
Oh yah, if you like surf guitar music, you should check out this band called the Surf Coasters. They have a show you can download from archive.org also. It's pretty killer.
