godspeed you! black emperor
May. 6th, 2005 01:43 amWhen I was much younger I spent some time drinking a lot of alcohol. That was my main purpose in life, to get beer and drink it. I pretty much don't drink anymore. My buddy Ian, who I used to live with/hang out with during those drinking years, has the power to send me back in time to those drinking days. The last time he came to Chico to visit we went out and got puking-in-the-bathroom drunk. At least I did, he was happy to tell me he only felt like puking but didn't. I mention all this drinking as a way to get to other things. Back when I was drunk a lot I also used a few illicit drugs. These were always supplied to me by others. I realize now that they were mostly just getting me fucked up because I was amusing to them, like a dancing bear or something, but at the time I was pretty naive and stupid about that kind of stuff.
I don't apologize for my use of drugs back then. I think that on some level it was beneficial to me. It threw my mind out of the ruts they were in and got me thinking outside the box I had been in. I think it might be useful for more people to get their mojo on once in a while. Even now I sometimes think I might like to go out in the desert, crawl into a hut and eat some funky cactus, just to see what happens. I don't know that I will though, anytime soon.
But that's ok, cause now I have a legal drug called Godspeed You! Black Emperor. They are a band from Canada and they are unlike anything I've ever listened to before. This is music to listen to in the dark through headphones, turned up loud. One of the reviews on Amazon calls the album f#a# (infinity symbol) a soundtrack for the end of the world and I can hear why he says that. I don't know that I'd want to listen to this while on any sort of drugs. At least not something overly strong.
Here is a link to the first ... movement... on the album referenced above. It is called The Dead Flag Blues. It's about 17 minutes long and a 30MB download.
I was planning on writing more about this album and this band, but it's 1:40 am and my eyes are about to pop out of my head, which would be bad cause the dog would eat them lickety split. Instead I'll post this link to a bunch of reviews of the album and you can read what those guys have to say, if you want.
