Support the Troops
Jul. 3rd, 2005 11:40 pmHas the phrase 'Support the Troops' become some sort of code for something else?
I just saw a segment on our local news about some lady who had painted white stars on her lawn for the fourth of July. As they are talking to her she mentions that she has a friend who has a grandson 'over there' and "This just seemed like a good way to Support the Troops."
How, exactly, does painting white stars on your lawn support our soldiers over in Iraq? Wouldn't a better way to support the troops be to buy a bullet proof vest and send it over there? Or send them some home made cookies or a stack of Playboy magazines? Go over to their elderly grandmother's house and mow her lawn and make sure she's ok so that the soldier over there doesn't have to worry about Granny? Give his wife and kids a break on their rent so that 'the trooper' over there doesn't have to worry that his family will be evicted? Write a letter to your congressman or senator and tell them to work on getting our troops out of Iraq. So many ways to 'support the troops'.
But most people 'support the troops' by painting white stars on their lawn and sticking yellow ribbon magnets on their cars. And then if you suggest that maybe we shouldn't be in Iraq those 'supporters' accuse you of being a traitor and not supporting the troops.
