The Naked Prey

There was a time, a time before dvds, a time before high speed internet downloades, a time before even vcrs, a time when I would get the new TV Guide and scour the late night movie listings to see what was on that was good. If I saw a movie that I liked, I'd set my alarm clock (or just stay up) so I could watch it. That's what you had to do back then. It was a different world. You couldn't just pop in a movie and watch it, you had to work at it, by golly! Kids today, they just don't understand. They're all spoiled, I tell ya. Probably none of em seen a movie at a drive in with a crappy speaker hanging in the window. I pity these kids.

Today it is a simple matter to watch just about anything you want whenever you want. The dvd market is flooded with old tv series and movies. Netflix has a huge library of dvds available and more and more becomes available everyday as "The Man" scrambles to find more stuff to sell us.

But not everything has been released on dvd yet. One instance of this is a great movie starring Cornel Wilde called The Naked Prey. Not only does it star Cornel, he directed it also. The basic plot of the movie is: A bunch of wankers on safari don't listen to their guide (Cornel Wilde) and piss off some natives. The natives attack the safari, kill almost everybody but save the white guys. Then they kill the white guys in different ways. One dude is covered in clay and slow roasted. One is put in a bad situation with some snakes. One guy is given to the women (poor bastard!). Then it's Cornel's turn. His character doesn't have a name. In fact, this movie has very little dialogue. The way they kill Cornel is to strip him naked, give him a head start and then the first native warrior chases after him to kill him. Cornel is a bad ass though. Not bad ass like today's action heroes, but bad ass never the less. In a more realistic way. He doesn't get killed by the first guy and he eventually gets a good lead on the band of guys chasing him and the whole movie is his attempt to get to safety.

It's a great movie and it is has not been officially released on dvd, most likely for some screwed up legal reason. It's one of my favorite flicks. I haven't seen it in ages and abscence makes the heart grow fonder, right?

However, I have found the website for a dude that sells a Naked Prey dvd (ripped from a vhs copy, I assume). Normally I wouldn't touch this sort of thing with a ten foot pole. I've seen some of these knockoffs in various places and they usually blow chunks as far as quality, but this guy sounds like he is a fan and has worked at making a good copy. I need to order one.
