public education, neocon style
Oct. 3rd, 2005 10:09 amHere is a link to an article titled "A True Story About Bill Bennett". Bennett was the Secretary of Education during the first Bush Regime and Drug Czar at one point. He's also had some problems with a gambling habit that cost him millions of dollars and recently he made a comment on his radio show about aborting black babies to lower the crime rate.
The part of the story that I thought was noteworthy:
At any rate, since Mr. Bennett had been Secretary of Education I asked him to support the bill in the crucial stage when we needed Republican allies. He told me he would not help, because he did not want public schools to obtain new funding, new capability, new tools for success. He wanted them, he said, to fail so that they could be replaced with vouchers,charter schools, religious schools, and other forms of private education.
This was the Secretary of Education for the United State saying that he WANTED the public school system to fail.
With jackasses like that in charge, it's no wonder our school system is as fucked up as it is.
