Tales of the City
Apr. 25th, 2006 10:42 pmI read the first book of this series by Armistead Maupin several years ago and really dug it. I didn't have the rest of the books though and was sidetracked by the cancer thingie so I never read anymore of them.
I recently bought all six of the books in the series and just finished rereading the first one. It's still great.
I read part of it to Doro and she said it was too gay for her. Whatever. Reading these books is like an education in writing. It's just great stuff.
She said she doesn't understand why I like these books so much and I don't know that I can explain why either. It's definitely not my usual fare.
Anyway, if a gay(ish) soap opera(ish) series set in San Francisco in the 70's (for the first book anyway) sounds good to you, the you should check these out. Even if that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, if you like good writing, check em out.
This is from the front of the second book in the series and it amuses me:
As the poets have mournfully sung
Death takes the innocent young
The rolling in money
The screamingly funny
And those who are very well hung
- W.H. Auden
And this site amused me a little too.
