We don't have a very large yard here.  It's barely big enough for the dog to feel comfortable when he's taking a dump (he's a mobile pooper, likes to spread it out I guess).  For several years now I've had an old gas mower that I inherited from a buddy that moved away.  It was in sorry shape when I got it and being basically stored out in the weather for the past 4 years or so hasn't improved it at all.

I've been meaning to replace it for some time now and I really wanted an old school push reel mower.  I hate dealing with the gas one, especially for such a small space.

I didn't really want to spend $100+ on a new one though.  I was sure that somebody out there had an old one in the garage that they wanted to get rid of.  The things are solid metal for the most part and not likely to break down.  There must be tons of them gathering dust in America.

The other day [livejournal.com profile] bug_311  mentioned in a post that she was having a yard sale.  I commented that the only thing I was looking for at a garage sale was one of these mowers.  Well, it turns out her Uncle Fred had one and he sold it to me for 20 smackers!

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] bdanube stopped by and dropped off the mower.  That's it in the picture, on my freshly mowed lawn. Notice the custom handle, courtesy of the afore mentioned Uncle Fred.  I'll be using this baby for many, many years.  Mowing with it instead of that noisy ass, dog-scaring gas mower is awesome.  It vibrates the green part of my heart in a special way.

And when I'm done mowing with it, the air smells of freshly mowed grass rather than burnt petrofuel emissions.

Also, it's tough as nails.  As [livejournal.com profile] bdanube said when he delivered it, I'll be mowing with it after the coming Apocalypse.   Yes, when you're all crying because there is no more gas and the grass of your lawn is knee high and you can't find your kids in it anymore, I'll be leaning on my 18" J. C. Penney Push Reel Mower, smiling, on my neatly mown grass.
