Modest Mouse concert
Jul. 17th, 2004 12:34 amLet me start off by saying I am not a Modest Mouse fan. By that I don't mean I dislike them but rather that I don't own any of their CDs. I had heard of MM fairly often and I had been meaning to check them out. When I heard they were playing at the Senator I ordered a ticket and then downloaded about a cd worth of their stuff off of Bearshare. For a couple of weeks now I've been listening to that cd at least once a day at work. I like em well enough.
My reasons for going to the show were three fold. I wanted to check out MM. I wanted to check out what they had done to the Senator. I wanted to go out.
First thing I have to say is, I must be getting old. When the band started playing my first thought was "Damn, that's loud!" Too loud. Yah, I know. If it's too loud I'm too old. Guess so.
As the band played, very loudly, I couldn't understand a word of the lyrics. The singer didn't sound anything at all like the guy I'd been listening to at work. I recognized none of these songs. I was dissapointed. I know that many bands sound different when heard live, but this was ridiculous.
Eheheh. That was the opening band. Doh! For the record, I didn't care too much for their show.
A half hour or so break while MM got ready. It was quite warm in the Senator. I walked around and checked the place out. It isn't finished. There was a lot I could not see because there were so many people in the place. What I saw looked pretty good though. I'm looking forward to going to the Senator again for something else. They could use bigger air conditioners though, for those July concerts.
I didn't sit much. I wandered about a bit. Had a sweet spot near the exit upstairs for a while. The security guy kept chasing people away from that area but he always left me alone. I was thinking it was good to be an older guy. Err. I mean, prematurely grey. He must have seen the mature wisdom shining from my face and knew I would be no trouble. Then he told me I had to move cause the fire marshal was coming through. Doh! Just as MM was starting I had to scamper off to find a fresh perch. I ended up kitty corner from where I had been. Now I was downstairs by the exit, but on the opposite side of where I had been. A nice spot against the wall, which was concrete or something and gave off a little coolness, which was welcome. A steady trail of people came and went from the area in front of the stage. They went down frisky and bopping and they came back by me dripping wet and drained looking. I did not venture down that path. I was content with my spot by the door.
The music. It was ok. I should have wore some earplugs. The music was so loud it detracted from the enjoyment for me. I hate saying that but it's the truth. Some music just doesn't need to be played at 11 and I think MM plays the kind of music that can be enjoyed a few decibels lower than what they put out tonight.
They played for about an hour. When they came back out for an encore I left. I was feeling a wee bit faint or dizzy. I think because of the heat in there and I might have had my legs locked while standing there. Might have cut off the flow of blood or something. Felt real good to go outside and get some fresh air. I got a headache though. Didn't even listen to a cd in the car, just enjoyed the silence.
I'll be sure to bring some ear protection for the Pixies.
As an aside, I received the dvd of The Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense concert in the mail the other day. That's a concert I would have liked to be at. The Talking Heads were cool. Soo geeky and anti-rock stars but still made some awesome music. And from the looks of this dvd, they put on a great show.
