While over at my girlfriend's place I was looking at her bookshelf and she showed me the shelf dedicated to her friend's and family member's favorite books. Then she told me I had to tell her my top ten books. That's tough.

First off, my favorite book list won't be as intellectual as all the other books on that shelf. I've always read for fun and escapism. My favorite books reflect that.
Second, I don't know if I can come up with 10 favorites. I'll give it a shot, though I'm sure I'll forget a book or two.

1: Swiss Family Robinson by Johann Wyss. I have the Educator Classic Library edition of this book and I've read it many times. This book is like comfort food for me or something. It's pretty cheesy and unrealistic but I've enjoyed it since the first time I read it many years ago. I'm not sure why. The Educator Classic Library series are great. I've got a bunch of em.

2: Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. This book was a major influence on my political mental developement. The movie named after this book is a travesty.

3: Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Larry McMurty just plain rocks. He writes some good stuff. The mini-series based on this book is totally badass too. One of the rare cases of a movie version of a great book equalling or maybe even exceeding it's source.

4: Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Another one from my past. When my dad was in the army he would get books to take with him when he went out in the field or travelling. When he got home he'd leave them around the house and that's how I got introduced to Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, and Louis Lamour's Sacketts. I remember finding in the library in Warsaw Indiana a nearly full run of the Tarzan series. I practically camped out in one of the big old chairs they had there while I read those books.

5: Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. This book blew me away when I read it. It's just a very cool book. The quote they have on the Wikipedia page is one of the great ones from Snow Crash. I loved that when I read it the first time. It's so totally true.

6: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. The first in the Song of Fire and Ice series. This is a great fantasy series. George shares Larry McMurtry's penchant for killing off characters. I still really like this series. Been waiting years for the next book to come out.

I'm not sure what else to put on this list. I like lots of books. Most of the ones I would consider 'favorites' are from my childhood. Sort of nostalgic favorites. I have more favorite authors than favorite books. It's late, I gotta go to bed.
